Getting started

How do I get StreetDrill?

StreetDrill is in testing on iPhone. Request tester access and we'll send your Tester ID, access code and install steps.

How do I sign in?

Enter your name, then the Tester ID and access code from your invite. The code is checked on your phone, so signing in works without a signal. If it says the code doesn't match, check the Tester ID first: it's the part that looks like jane-doe.

How do I set my station?

You pick a home base when you first sign in, and can change it any time in Profile under Home base: one of the six Richardson stations, or any address. Under Study area, choose that station's first-due district, a radius around your home base, or the whole city.

What do the difficulty levels do?
  • Easy: main roads first, with extra hints, like street names on the map in route games.
  • Standard: a blank map with no street names. Neighborhood streets included.
  • Expert: every street, fewer hints, and no map until you answer. Like the written test.

Change it in Profile under Difficulty.

The games

Which game should I start with?

Run today's Shift Drill: ten mixed questions show where you stand. Then take a Response Run from quarters and call the route turn by turn. Progress shows the streets you miss, and they come back until they stick.

Why was my route marked wrong?

Response Run accepts near-equal alternates, so a move counts as right when it keeps you close to the fastest route. Routes follow one-ways, turn costs (lefts cost more than rights) and signals, but they're a study model, not a dispatch router. If a route looks wrong for the real road, email us the address and the move, and we'll check it.

I can't hear the dispatcher or the tones.

On iPhone, the voice and sounds are muted when the ringer switch is set to silent. Flip it, turn the volume up, and check that Dispatcher voice and Sounds are on in Profile. In Dispatch Drill you can also tap Show text to read the call.

How does the streak work?

Finish any game on a day to count it. Up to four days off in a row keep the streak alive, so studying on duty days of a 48/96 never breaks it.

The map and data

An address or street is missing.

About 1% of city addresses are on newer streets that OpenStreetMap doesn't have yet, so they're left out until it does. Email us the address and we'll look at it. See every source.

Are fire hydrants on the map?

No. The City doesn't publish hydrant locations as open data, so StreetDrill can't include them.

Is StreetDrill made by the City or the fire department?

No. StreetDrill is an independent study aid made by Hantis USA, LLC. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the City of Richardson or Richardson Fire Department. Always follow your department's SOGs, and verify routes before relying on them.

Your progress and data

Where is my progress saved?

On your phone, and nowhere else. StreetDrill has no account server, and it never uses your location. Read the privacy policy.

What's in the tester report?

Your name, Tester ID and role, the rating and notes you gave each game, your sessions, accuracy and weakest streets. It goes out only when you tap Share tester report in Progress, as a text or email you send yourself.

How do I reset or delete my progress?

In Progress, tap Reset progress. That clears XP, your streak, game stats, mastery, history and ratings on that phone. Deleting the app removes everything. More about your data.

I signed out. Is my progress gone?

No. It stays on the phone until a different Tester ID signs in there. Sign back in with the same Tester ID to pick up where you left off.
